Up above Bergen - walks and hikes
It only takes a few minutes to climb away from the hustle of Bergen to the top of Fløyen, where the air is clean, the scenery is beautiful and there are numerous choices for walks and hikes. From the upper station of Fløibanen, you can set off on short or long walks, easy hikes or a hillwalk requiring a certain degree of fitness. Our hiking map (Norwegian /English) for Fløyen provides tips for alternative trails in and around the Fløyen area. The map is marked with the most popular and waymarked trails, with descriptions. The hiking map is also available at the ticket office in the lower station.
Picnic huts for free use
Thanks to subsidies from a number of major businesses in Bergen, six new picnic huts have been erected on Fløyen, for free use for all visitors. The picnic huts are a destination in themselves, providing a perfect spot to sit down and enjoy your lunch. They are also a great form of shelter if a rain cloud should pass overhead. The picnic huts are easy to spot from the trails and are marked on the hiking map. New stone barbeque areas and open fireplaces have been set up with tables and benches at Fløysletten and around Skomakerdiket lake. These are free for all visitors. Fløysletten
Fløysletten is an area only a few minutes’ walk from the upper station and is a popular spot, particularly for young children. This is an open area where kids can explore and play in a safe environment. Fløysletten is easy to reach, even with a pram. It has barbeque areas made of stone, open fireplaces, benches and tables. This is a great place for sledging in the winter.
Skomakerdiket (The Shoemaker’s Dyke)
The idyllic Skomakerdiket lake is only a few minutes’ walk from the upper station. The walk to Skomakerdiket lake is on gravel tracks and is perfect for prams. There is a picnic hut, barbeque and fireplaces with benches and tables around the banks of the lake.
Longer hillwalks in Bergen
Below are several descriptions of longer hillwalks available, using the upper station as base. You can also try leaving the beaten track to find complete peace and quiet and explore new areas on your hikes above Bergen. Make Fløibanen your starting point for wonderful adventures on trails through beautiful scenery.
Fløyen
For those who prefer to leave the beaten track, Fløyen is a world of opportunity. One example is to start on Blåmansveien, then follow Halvdan Griegsvei through forest landscape to Nedrediket, continuing up the valley to Storediket then south to the Brushytten picnic hut (open on Sundays). From there, you can choose from a number of trails heading into the mountains or down to town.
Important information for hillwalkers
The signposts on the mountains surrounding Bergen show the direction of the main trails marked on the most common hiking maps. However, weather conditions such as wind, ice and snow and vandalism may cause damage to the signposts or that they have changed direction. It is therefore essential to act with caution in poor weather. The weather can change very rapidly on the mountains around Bergen, and fog can come in quickly. Always take a map and compass, in case of poor weather.
The public right of way provides free access to the countryside and to harvest what you find, but also involves an obligation to safeguard the countryside out of consideration for others and for future generations. The Outdoor Recreation Act contains detailed information on the public right of way (go to http://www.lovdata.no (Norwegian/English).
Information on what is permitted in the Fløyen area in terms of lighting fires, camping etc. is available at www.byfjellene.no (Norwegian/English).
