About the company
Fløibanen AS is a company with long traditions in Bergen. Fløibanen's lower station with its characteristic building is located in the centre of Bergen at Vetrlidsallmenning 23 A, and our head office is at Vetrlidsallmenning 21.
Fløibanen has carried over 48 million people to and from the Fløyen mountain since it was first opened in 1918. Over the past few years, passenger numbers have averaged around 1 million a year.
As at 31 December 2001, the company had 368 shareholders. Our principal shareholders are Bergen local council and the brewery Hansa Borg Bryggerier. In 2000 Fløibanen posted a profit after tax of NOK 1,666,942. The bulk of our income is generated from ticket sales.
Fløibanen AS has 13 permanent employees, in addition to temporary ticket staff and drivers during the summer season.
There are three stations on the way to the top of Fløyen: Promsgate, Fjellveien and Skansemyren. The journey time is 5 - 6 minutes. At Fløibanen's upper station (320 metres above sea level) there are a kiosk, souvenir shop, restaurant and a large and exciting playground for children. Fløibanen's upper station is also an ideal starting point for exploring the mountains around Bergen.
Over the years, Fløibanen has cemented its position as Bergen's most popular tourist attraction and according to the Norwegian Council for Tourism, Fløibanen was Norway's fourth most visited tourist attraction in the 2001 summer season. Most of the traffic occurs in the summer months from May to September.
Fløibanen AS provides transport for local residents, but we are also aware of our role as a professional tourism company and of the growing demands for a top-quality product.
In 2002 we carried out the most comprehensive renovation of Fløibanen since it began operations (See "The new Fløibanen").
